Jonah Nolan Responds to Dark Knight Snubs
January 23, 2009
Despite The Dark Knight receiving 8 Oscar nominations (see here), it wasn't nominated in top categories such as Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Co-writer Jonah Nolan sent his reaction to the fans at DarkCampaign.com:
hey — not sure who to address this to as it looks like a collective effort, but I just wanted to pass along my thanks.
It's truly humbling that you guys would take the time and effort to try to get the film recognized. I, like you, was disappointed that Chris didn't get some recognition this morning, but for Heath and so many of the people who worked so hard on this thing to get nominated is thrilling.
Any nominations for a comic book movie is a thing of beauty no matter how you slice it, and that takes the sting out a bit. Besides, I've been to the big show before, and, like any of these things, it's a little disappointing. Did you know it's not even an open bar once the show starts? At least this time I would have remembered to bring a little cash so I could buy myself a drink after losing.
The best part of this experience is seeing other people getting passionate about the film the way that we did. It has been a truly incredible experience. So thank you again.
best,
jonah nolan

How noble of him. That's why this thing was soo cool...we still love the movie, and after this week, it'll top a billion dollars in ticket sales! Go Dark Knight!!!

The Dark Knight was a fantastic film and the Nolan boys were robbed.
True shame.

The Nolans are classy guys. I hade a chance to see them at Wizard World Chicago 2 summers ago while TDK was filming in Chicago and they were just awesome

god damme it thats critics, dark knight was superior over almost the reader!!!, or Frost Nixxon!!!! cmon this could be a way to give a real recognition at people which work in hollywood and give us more that a kind of commercial movie, Dark knight is a REAL GREAT MOVIE, not just a paycheck for people who works in hollywood....

As much as I want to say the Oscars don't matter, it was a shame to see TDK not get the nominations it deserved. But it's truly a pioneer film, one that will set the road for future comic book movies to live up to, and likely be nominated for the top categories.
Besides, it wouldn't be the Oscars is we didn't like 1/3 of the nominations, hate 1/3 of the nominations, and wonder why the other 1/3 would ever be considered.

You know? Yeah, the movie was great. I loved it. But what the hell do I care if it gets an Oscar or not? Yeah, it's good for the people involved but you know what? There is nobody in Hollywood that's going to say it is even close to a failure especially by how much money it made. No Oscar? Big deal. It's not going to take away my enjoyment of the film, the same as a movie winning an Oscar is not going to make me like it any better. Most Oscar winning movies are **** though so maybe it's just norm for The Dark Knight to not get one.

Very awesome of him to say that. In the end though who cares if it didnt get nominated for the big 3, I mean it got nominated for 8 already (The most EVER for a comic book movie) Everybody who starred in it will go on to make lots of money (except for Heath of course but he will get his oscar) As for the Nolan brothers well, they can go on and pick any project their hearts desire and just like fincher, chris will get his oscar nom eventually.

Said it before and I'll say it again - the nominations that were announced just confirmed the suspicions of a TON of people; and that is the Academy has lost touch with mainstream appeal. They've shot themselves in the foot with these low-budget, limited-release films that have had no promotion until the awards started piling up. Any hopes for a jump in the ratings this year just got thrown out the window. And while a Best Picture nod was a huuuge long shot, I had at least hoped that Chris Nolan would get a Best Direction nomination, because the work he did on TDK was painstakingly incredible.
But I digress. In the end, I believe The Dark Knight was the best film of 2008 because it was much, much, MUCH more than just a superhero flick. It's just too bad the Academy still sees it that way.
Their loss.

there will be RIOTS if Heath doesn't win
Posted by: Who cares? on January 23, 2009 at 18:27:27
Seriously. . . screw the Academy Awards; it's little more than a cliquish contest of 'who's who.' Why should fans care about that? The people as a whole spoke by way of film attendance. No other film of this decade or the next will ever put up the kind of numbers that TDK did. That in itself is award worthy.

Thank you Jonah for responding. Its a shame that the Academy doesn't know, but the movie going public knows and thats all that counts. The Oscars suck again for another year. Hopefully, their ratings will be down for another year and they'll be wondering why again, idiots.

So Titanic gets nominated and wins everything, but TDK which was about a billion times better gets nothing?
TDK was a million times better than Ben Button
a thousand times better than Frost/Nixon
and about a hundred times better than anything Kate Winslet has ever done
They should just stop airing the oscars on TV because the general public could care less about any of the films nominated this year. TDK could've sent rating through the roof, even if it didn't win.
Plus, in my opinion, it was the best picture of the year and I think the amount of money it has grossed so far can attest to the fact that the majority of the public feel the same way.

I have to agree with nunya.
Posted by: Farradin on January 23, 2009 at 18:46:53
I'm sorry but I'm incensed. His was the greatest snub of all. Say what you will about the film, but the screenplay is genuinely great. The only suprise from the nominations for me (regarding TDK at least), was the exclusion of easily the most memorable screenplay of the year.
I think I'm only going to watch the BAFTA's this year. TDK didn't get the noms here either but it wasn't as impotant a film here as it was here. Mamma Mia (not a great film), the film that struck a chord with the audiences here was at least nominated for Best British Film.
What those nominations basically say is that the viewing public and critics have literally NO IDEA about the overall quality of a film. SATR(Sorry about the rant).

Blah, blah, blah. Damn cheesey comic book movies! What has the film industry come to that some material that's fit only for 6 year olds is expected to get oscars? This shows the academy still has decent standards.

OMG...get over it people. I see every reason why the Dark Knight didn't get Oscar nods in Best Picture/Director and is due to the fact it's the Oscars. The Oscars are the highest honor in awards for film and as great as it is to see a comic book movie nominated you need to look at what the Oscars honor. The Oscars always honor actors that show great range with their craft or directors that take a risk with material being made. Just because a movie is mainstream and makes a **** load of money doesn't mean it's a show in for Best Picture. I'm sick of all these people saying The Dark Knight is the be all and end all of all movies because it's not. Film is an art and the Oscars see it as such, just look at the past Oscars and films that have won. I don't know why people are so suprised by this, all ya'all need to wake up and deal with it!

I have to agree with a lot of people here. The Dark Knight was wrongly snubbed.
Slumdog Millionaire is just as plausible a story as The Dark Knight. The Academy fails to realize this. Also, The Dark Knight has a much better moral. I don't understand the values the Academy has. They should make their judging scores public.
Posted by: Rich on January 23, 2009 at 18:58:36
Well, anyone with more than a little interest in the way these things work know 90% of these contests are fixed. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out..
Slumdog Millionaire - Cult Classic(apparently)from abroad B-Movie with B-Actors in a stationary setting, with a sub-standard story.
The Dark Knight - 2nd highest grossing Domestic movie of all time, very large amounts of broken records, iconic comic book hero around the World, well written, well directed, well acted out.
Hmm. Somethings wrong here.
I'm not debating Slumdog Millionaire isn't a good movie, as I havn't seen it. I don't think I have to see it though to understand what it's about. Either way you slice it, it's a spec on the canvas of what The Dark Knight has covered in so many superior ways.
Who votes on these damn things? Really? FIXED

8 nominations is more than enough i know the people are gonna think "here we go again another 200 page forum of ZOMG TDK FOR ALL"
Ive seen 99% of the movies on the list and am personally rooting for Danny Boyle to get some recognision for his amazing work on what seems to be all his films.
Slumdog Millionare was a fantastic film in a long list of what hes done "UP THE BRITS! =P"

i loved the dark night but i don't feel it's an oscar best picture type of movie. it's still basically an action movie. i'm not saying the 5 picked were the best choices but they do appeal on more levels. slumdog millionaire was a great movie on so many levels. box office doesn't mean anything. so i guess shrek should have gotten a best picture nod, or those crappy pirates movies?? oscars go to movies that are thought of as more than "that movie was awesome" once you leave the theater.
so while i loved the dark knight it didn't change how i felt about anything or make me change how i feel, act or treat people. it was a fun and gritty movie. some movies help you escape for a couple hours, others change you. i love both. oscars are for the latter, most times.

@rem
God, your a bigger biased idiot then Nunya.
Today's audiences are so feebled-minded that they only see mindless summer films. And most summer films are just "pure fluff" (Believe me, I like summer films but the majority don't are not even remotely close to award worthy for Best Picture. A best picture for most summer films is Best Special Effects. I'm not dissing "The Dark Knight" cause it was a great film & more of a drama thriller then a comic book film but this is about today's public not knowing a blessed thing about film. Anyone that thinks that money decides what's a great film is imprudent & dense let alone futile beyond belief.

correction: "(Believe me, I like summer films) but the majority are not even remotely close..."
Posted by: THE ACADEMY CAN SUCK IT on January 23, 2009 at 19:17:18
The Academy has no idea what a truly deserving film really is. I don't understand how they can snub a film that permeated society on such a massive level!!! They are too full of themselves to reward that. Well, **** em anyway!!
