Will Thunder Strike Dark Knight?
August 12, 2008
After four weekends at the top of the box office, The Dark Knight is likely to be pushed to second place as DreamWorks/Paramount's comedy Tropic Thunder opens at 3,319 theaters on Wednesday and has a good shot at staying in first through the weekend.
Variety says the studio is looking for the Hollywood sendup, which stars Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), to at least match the overall five-day take of last week's Pineapple Express at $41.3 million.
Because its audiences skew older, Tropic Thunder is very unlikely to match "Pineapple's" record-breaking $12.1 million debut last Wednesday. DreamWorks is looking for an opening day in the mid- to high single digits.
However, the film should far exceed the $23.3 million opening weekend take for Pineapple Express. Now that Warner Bros.' The Dark Knight is seeing its weekend grosses fall into the teens, "Thunder" will likely be No. 1 for the Friday-to-Sunday frame, with the only potential competition coming from Warner Bros.' Star Wars: The Clone Wars, hitting theaters Friday.

I think everyone should go watch The Dark Knight once more then go watch clones or thunder.

Dark Knight has had a remarkable run and yet I do think this will be the week it's finally knocked off, I wouldn't be at all surprised if it finds away to win again. Either way, it's been a hell of a ride!

Mirrors is going to tank this weekend. The premise sounds silly and like an old Twilight Zone episode.

MIrrors IS going to tank, and sounds WORSE than an old Twilight Zone episode. Horror movies continue to go downhill with no end in sight

I wouldn't mind if Thunder ousted Dark Knight, it looks damn funny and has a little bit of commentary on the business, so it works on different levels. I mean, i know it's blasphemy to admit that, but yeah, if anything has to take it down Tropic Thunder looks worthy.

Tropic Thunder?
...er...no.
RDJ as Tony Stark...brilliant.
RDJ as Soul Brother fraud perpetrated by an Australian? WTF!?!
Stiller and Black are funny guys but not guaranteed moneymakers.
Clone Wars and Pineapple Express may halve Tropic Thunder's box office. TDK may lose Friday but win the weekend.

It had to heppen eventually, but I think everyone has seen TDK atleast 3-4 times now and we're all looking for something new. However, ven though im a huge Star Wars fan, I really dont think Clone Wars is the kinda new we're looking for. Thunder's going to walk away with the weekend gross, hands down.

You know I will see Dark Knight again this weekend.
Titanic needs to go down come on Batfans unite and let's make a comic movie the overall #1!

the dark knight will be number 2 on the all-time lise thats all that matters at this point

3-4 times? Why not just download it?! Kidding! Though I really don't understand the point of seeing a movie you enjoy more than twice in a 3 week period simply to increase its profit margin. TDK WILL NOT BEAT TITANIC... which is a shame because that movie really blows.

There's a good chance Tropic Thunder WILL beat TDK this weekend, but I mean, TDK has been in theatres for a month now, and it's looking to take over the all-time gross list or whatever it is. Any money it gets is going to contribute to it's total. It will still reach the top, even if it's not number one this weekend.
Although, we could all be surprised. I mean, I'm going to see Tropic Thunder on Wednesday, because man, it looks funny, but I'll for sure see TDK again soon. :P

Haha, RDJ's revenge. That's funny!
Space Monkey, I may take you up on that! (Are you still going my Space Monkey, then? I did so like "Primate from Pluto"...)

I have seen it 3 times, going for number 4 this weekend. Let's put the push on this guys and gals. Yes, tickets were less when Titanic was at the box office, but gas was also like $1.20. This is a much tougher economic situation, this movie deserves to be number 1 of all time.
Let's get it done! Go see it again.

or maybe Thunder won't do so well due to the controvery over the use of "retarded" in the film
Posted by: sag002 on August 12, 2008 at 23:41:26
Clone wars is gonna suck, mirrors is gonna suck. people will be seeing thunder or pineapple. could dark knight be...(gasp)...number 3 this weekend?
Posted by: Batman's Cowl on August 12, 2008 at 23:43:16
CW will do good, not great. TT no one outside of the net has heard of it, so, maybe 2.

Anyone who thinks TDK is gonna be #1 this weekend, or that it will beat Titanic, is just fooling themself. =(
