Exclusive: Jeremy Renner Talks Hawkeye!

November 30, 2009

We just got back from the Independent Film Gotham Awards where Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker won awards for Best Ensemble Performance and for Best Feature, putting it well into the running for Best Picture at the Oscars. It was a wild and crazy night, but we couldn't leave without getting a few moments in with one of the film's stars, Jeremy Renner, who was all over the internet this weekend when Empire magazine broke the news that he has had talks about possibly playing the role of Hawkeye in Marvel Studios' The Avengers movie.

Anyone who has seen The Hurt Locker knows how great Renner is as a hotshot bomb expert in Iraq, exemplifying the perfect attitude to bring to the Avengers' hotshot archery expert Hawkeye. The first thing we wanted to know was whether there'd been any more news since doing that interview with Empire. "I haven't heard anything since I talked to them three weeks ago," he admitted. "The last I knew is that they still have to find their director for 'The Avengers,' that's where he's really going to show up. They were just talking, 'Like maybe we should consider maybe hiring Hawkeye now' but there's no director on 'Avengers' so they don't really want to force-feed the director, 'Here's the whole cast.' It's a big role so they didn't want to do that to the director, so I think they might wait. I know they're interested, I'm interested, so we'll see if it works out."

We told him how excited SuperHeroHype readers--at least the ones who've seen The Hurt Locker--were about his possible casting in the role, and how hopefully those who haven't seen the movie will try and check it out. "They sold me on the idea, too, because I love the idea that Hawkeye's really not a superhero," Jeremy told us. "He's just a man with a high skill set, so I can relate to (that). The Marvel guys are great for how they made Iron Man to be, 'Oh, that's actually plausible' so I bought it and I love that. They're really, really smart guys and I'd love to work for 'em, and we'll see if it works out."

When we asked him if he's started reading up on his Hawkeye comic book history just in case he gets the role, he gave us a possible hint of what the character might look like in the movie compared to the comics: "Yeah, but it's going to be modernized, it's not going to be the guy with the big purple (mask), it's not going to be a guy in tights. It's going to be a guy in sunglasses and a vest. He's going to be more modernized and I'm gonna say, 'A cooler-looking version' and not the big weird costume he had on. I don't think they're going that route."

So while some people keep busy rooting for Jeremy's Oscar chances, let's all of us here at SuperHeroHype keep rooting for his Hawkeye chances!

Look for a lot more interviews from the Gothams over on ComingSoon.net later this week.

sounds like they will be going for the "Ultimate" look for Clint Barton.

Sun glasses and a vest... really?

I love that he wants to play hawkeye, he really has the attitude down, gonna be awesome to the fullest extent... but i pray to god he is wrong about his costume. that is a huge reason i love superheroes, they have the balls to actually where a purple in their costume. i hope the directors and writers know that its necessary to have these costumes because it makes the characters more than man. especially in hawkeyes case, his costume makes him pimp. i can handle no purple but for the love of comics give me a mask!.... in closing, marvels kicks ass~!!

I thought he looks way better in Ronin (picture up top) costume from the New Avengers than with his old purple costume. Just to funny looking.

Posted by: acslaterson on December 1, 2009 at 00:47:18

Maybe post a picture of him in his Hawkeye gear instead of Ronin? I wish they would just call him Ronin and use the Ronin outfit, it would look much better on screen.

"It's going to be a guy in sunglasses and a vest"

Again with the cheap f-cking Ultimate refuge... like Nick Fury wasn't enough.

I could buy that Hawkeye doesn't wear a costume, but more of a military-issue uniform. It makes sense to me.

Posted by: v on December 1, 2009 at 00:54:36

yeahh, they should get the Ultimate Avengers Version (with the Grifter-Looking mask), but of course keeping the bow and arrows, ´cause last time I checked hawkeye was using guns in stead

y'gotta admit though, the Ultimates, for all intents and purposes, was the attempt to storyboard what a filmic Avengers would look like.

I understand the desire to go as classic as possible though...

"I pretty much hate the character and everything that's fun about superheroes, but I'm really excited for this role!"

Posted by: Chewy on December 1, 2009 at 00:59:56

So which Ultimate costume would they choose?

I think the one he started to wear in Ultimates 3 would look great!

"Sunglasses and a vest"...

Hmmm... where have I seen that before?? I think it was a TV show???
hmmm.....

I like what I'm hearing but the outfit may be to close to the way they are doing Green Arrow in Smallville. I like the idea, perhaps a pair of amber glasses which is common among sharpshooters of all types. I'm very excited that they are wanting to have Hawkeye in the movie at all. We should be thankful for that.

He must have this role locked up in some way to be talking about it so constantly.

I doubt it is as "up in the air" as he makes it seem otherwise he will look quite the fool once casting actually begins and he isn't included.

Anyway, I don't get why some of you are trippin over the "vest and shades" comment.

Like deviating from Hawkeyes' original costume really matters all that much. It's not like he's as recognizable to the average moviegoer as say "Batman" or "Spiderman".

Just Google "Ultimate Hawkeye" and you can see how that outfit actually works out.

If you want him to have a purple "H" on his forehead just close your eyes and picture it when Hawkeye is onscreen.

Congrats for getting his word while this is still hot!

I don't think Jeremy or who ever this column is about, doesn't know what they're talking about. The actor in question hasn't even got a deal to play the role yet. He doesn't know what Marvel is going to do with Hawkeye. He doesn't know what Hawkeye's costume will look like either. He's not in the creative loop. That would be Marvel's job, not an actor who isn't even under contract.

One more thing regarding Haweye's costume. Every Marvel Studio movie has had all the characters in costume just like their comic counter part. I don't see Marvel breaking this tradition with Hawkeye.

Why make a superhero movie if one is embarrassed by superheroes and their traditions? Bizarre. No one remembers DareDevil wearing black sweats in that 80's Hulk made for TV movie?

Renner's hatred for the iconic look of Hawkeye makes me loathe him for this role.

Why make a superhero movie if one is embarrassed by superheroes and their traditions?"

I don't think it has anything to do with being embarrassed about superhero traditions as much as wanting them to match up with the times if done in a contemporary and "believable" manner.

You may want Wolverine to don the yellow tights for nostalgic reasons but for those being introduced to the character via a film it may come across as silly. Even Iron Mans armor has been jazzed up over the years and into the film.

There are other costumes to choose from thankfully in the case of Hawkeye.

Oh God,... here we go again. THINGS THAT U ACCEPT ON A 2 DIMENSIONAL COMIC BOOK PAGE DON'T ALWAYS TRANSFER WELL TO LIVE ACTION! Why do we keep having to have this argument? And yes,... of course Renner might have an inkling of how they want to design the characters look,.... HE'S IN DISCUSSIONS TO PLAY THE CHARACTER. If I were considering a role,... I'd wanna know if I was gonna get to wear cool modern militaristic superhero garb,...... or funky purple spandex....

Posted by: Fierce_Creature on December 1, 2009 at 05:03:57

Hollywood's default costume, black leather and sunglasses..
Yeah the X-men were real striking in all those black jumpsuits..I could really tell them apart and their personalities.

this guy sucks

Posted by: Ian on December 1, 2009 at 06:14:03

Unlike most people Hawkeye was in the forefront of my superhero line up when I was a kid. He was my favorite Avenger. And I'm highly devoted to keeping true to the characters and the material that spawned them...I.E. comics. I think if your not a comic fan go get attached to another genre and have a mind of your own instead of just following whats popular.
That being said, even as a kid I thought his outfit was...just stupid looking. I don't like the ultimate's series at all, but agree with the fact that SOME of the design concepts are better having an update. They could simply incorporate a little of his traditional style with the designs that the military is looking to use in the near future and come up with something that almost everyone would be happy with. They could even incorporate some purple in there for the die hard fans and traditionalist like me.
But seriously a straight translation of his original costume wouldn't look good no matter how you did it. Somethings are updated for a reason and personally when they keep what works and move from there it works out best for everybody.
Seriously take a second and google wolverines first appearance and see if you still argue with me.

Posted by: Ian on December 1, 2009 at 06:18:04

wow I said seriously a lot in the last little bit there...guess I'm serious? And tired its 5:30AM here and I just got done reading a bunch of tards talk 5h!t on something some of them clearly didn't know about. peace.

Posted by: Ian on December 1, 2009 at 06:24:27

oh and monkey porn
"even Nolan knew better than to put Bruce Wayne in gray spandex with a yellow symbol on his chest. Some things just work better done realistically."

even though I agree with what your saying check out batman dead end. He's in the original batsuit...even before the yellow around the bat symbol and it looks kick ass. I'm not trying to be condescending but sometimes there are ways to do it right and still have it look cool enough to where it just comes down to preference.

@darkie1973

Why do we keep having to read the unproven argument that the static imagery on the page can't work in live action? A talented director, production designer, costume designer, and cinematographer can make it work. You lack vision and imagination.

If Renner wants to just wear militaristic garb, he should sign on for a movie of that stripe, and avoid superheroes.

It astounds me that people claim to be fans of these characters, but don't like their aesthetic. There is a reason why they are iconic and time-tested.
