A few weeks ago, actor Vin Diesel posted a photo of himself at Marvel HQ next to a poster of the Avengers and, ever since, an internet zeitgeist has been dedicated to the discussion of his casting in a Marvel Studios film (ending with the revelation that he’s up for the role of Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy). Now it would appear someone else is trying their hand at building fan hysteria over a single photo. In this case, however, it’s likely just to have a bit of fun.
Star Trek Into Darkness star Simon Pegg posted a photo on Twitter today that read simply “Fun at Marvel,” with an image of himself pointing at Ant-Man. This has lead many to believe that the actor could be up for the lead role in the film that is being co-written and directed by his frequent collaborator, Edgar Wright. It should be noted, however, that Pegg did post two other photos of himself at Marvel HQ (one featuring the Hulk and one posing with Thor’s hammer. We’re relatively sure that neither of those parts is being recast at this time.)
While next week’s release of The World’s End concludes the ‘Cornetto’ Trilogy’ (which also includes Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz), Pegg and Wright have made clear in the past that the one ending won’t necessarily mean the end of their big screen collaborations. That being said, it’s just as likely that Pegg is having a bit of fun on his Twitter feed.
Ant-Man is slated for release on November 8th, 2015. Could you imagine Pegg playing the lead role?
Update: Pegg has returned to his Twitter feed with an update that clearly suggests his fans may have jumped the gun.
“FFS the Internet,” he writes. “All I did was point at the central character in my dear friend’s next movie, because I’m excited for him.”
